Fortnite: Battle Royale a carbon copy or a new game in the genre?

Fortnite‘s latest mode, Battle Royale, will be free to play when it launches on September 26 for Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC and Mac. In Battle Royale, players skydive from battle bus with pickaxes onto an island arena, scavenging for weapons, running away from an encroaching electricity field, and fight ways through 99 players to victory. Sounds familiar? This is because the game play resembles that of the other popular Battle Royale game, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

Check mate? Bluehole’s Chang Han Kim said in a press release that they had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of Unreal Engine 4, which was used to licensed the game. He continues to say that:

This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right. … The PUBG community has and continues to provide evidence of the many similarities as we contemplate further action.
